 Biographical Sketch

Qianghui was born and raised in a small village of Xiangtan, Hunan, China (The hometown of Chairman Mao). He began undergraduate studies at Peking University in 2001, and obtained his B.S. degree in chemistry in 2005. While at Peking University, Qianghui conducted undergraduate research in the laboratory of Prof. Weihong Li and Jinguang Wu, focusing on preparation of novel coordinated inorganic polymers. In the fall of 2005, he began doctoral studies at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) under the direction of Prof. Dawei Ma. During this period, Qianghui completed 1) the first enantioselective synthesis of (-)-englerin A, an anti-renal cancer sesquiterpene; 2) an efficient formal synthesis of cyclopeptide RP-66453. Upon completion of his graduate studies in 2010 and subsequent one-year employment as a research associate at SIOC, Qianghui was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from SIOC and Zhejiang Medicine Co., and moved to The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) to pursue post-doctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof. Phil S. Baran. The research focus was on 1) the semi-synthesis of highly oxidated steroids; 2) sulfinate salts involved C-H bond functionalization of heterocycles. In June 2015, Qianghui accepted an appointment at Wuhan University, where he is a professor in the College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and the Institute for Advanced Studies.
